STEM club

This week in the KS3 STEM club pupils were producing sugar crystals (pictured above)! Mixing sugar, water and a variety of food dyes, pupils aimed to create colourful crystals. Some pupils even attempted to mix the different dyes together. After the sugar water has been thoroughly mixed in an evaporation basin, it is left for 3 days, allowing all of the water to evaporate. Next week we will have photos of the sugar crystals the teams produced!

Science career of the week

This week’s career is ‘Nuclear medicine technologist’. Nuclear medicine technologists perform quality assurance on clinical equipment and perform scans to diagnose diseases. Information about experience opportunities, providers, entry requirements and much more can be found here: Science career of the Week

Please speak to Mr. Burke, who will provide you with more information about this, or any other, science career.

Space News

Astronomers have made a breakthrough discovery, capturing shock waves coursing through the cosmic web (as illustrated above). This web is made up of an intricate network of galaxies, gas, and dark matter that spans the observable universe. By combining thousands of radio telescope images, scientists were able to observe the faint glow that occurs as shock waves propel charged particles through the magnetic fields along the cosmic web. The ability to detect these shock waves could offer valuable insights into the properties and origins of the large-scale magnetic fields that remain largely enigmatic. This groundbreaking discovery opens up new possibilities for further exploration and a deeper understanding of the cosmic web.

STEM Week

Next week is STEM week. There are a whole host of activities going on next week for years 7-9 students. Make sure to get involved with all the activities throughout the week. Look out for next week’s newsletter for pictures and updates from the event.
