STEM club

This week pupils in year 8 built their own model of the lungs! This allowed them to understand the important role played by the diaphragm in expanding the lungs and increasing their volume, leading to a decrease in pressure and thus drawing air into the lungs. The picture shows the diaphragm relaxed and the lungs “empty”, whilst the other shows the diaphragm contracted and the lungs “filled”! Pictured (above left) is Mohammed-Shahzaib with a working model.

Students also applied finishing touches to their planetariums. It was messy work with paint and glitter adorning the desks! The last session before Christmas will be a small party to allow the group to celebrate their hard work over the course of the term. Pictured (above right) are the planetariums close to judgement day! Good luck to all entrants!

Moses Holden

On Thursday, the Astronomy students were given a fascinating talk about the life of Bolton-born astronomer Moses Holden, by the biographer Stephen Halliwell. The talk gave an insight into the self-taught genius of Holden and how his passion for knowledge led him to have such an incredible career and life exploring a number of different scientific pursuits.

Astronomy Christmas Competition

In the year 2055, Santa wants to expand his project to include another planet in our Solar System. There are several requirements that must be met by any planet for it to be considered suitable for Santa’s operation. If you think you can help, please let the Astronomy ambassadors know, so they can pass it on! See the posters or speak to an ambassador to find out more.

Space News

On 11 December, the Orion spacecraft, part of NASA’s Artemis mission, successfully splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. This marked the final major milestone of the Artemis I mission. Following some further tests of the spacecraft, eyes will be on the Artemis II mission, which will be the first crewed flight test of the Artemis missions.
