Science Enrichment Newsletter

This week, Year 7 were treated to an incredible Science Show (pictured below) from Mr McCann and Miss Booth, who showed off the incredible uses of liquid nitrogen, showing the effect extremely low temperatures can have on living organisms. They also demonstrated how the extraordinary expansion of evaporating nitrogen can be used to create a rocket. The rapid freezing of cream, again using liquid nitrogen, makes an incredibly smooth and delicious ice-cream. Students were also treated to the remarkable sight (and sound) of burning hydrogen, and an incredible ‘whoosh bottle’, burning ethanol vapour to create a blast of fire.

Space News

The SpaceX Crew-5, taking American, Russian and Japanese crew members, launched on Wednesday and docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday. The crew will stay in the ISS for about 6 months before making their return to Earth. On Saturday, Mercury will be at its furthest visual separation. This will make it perfect conditions for trying to spot the Sun’s closest planet. Try looking East, just before sunrise on Saturday for the best chance.
