LGBT+ History Month

Last month was LGBT+ History Month and so the Science team ran a creative bunting competition for our younger students to celebrate the contributions of LGBT+ Scientists throughout history.

Congratulations to the winner, Abigaella Nyiraneza 8R, who received a bag full of chocolates and Sharples goodies!

Science Careers

This week was National Careers Week 2022, and here in the science department we were going careers mad!

On Monday morning, Liam Guilfoyle of Cronton College, put on an animal care workshop for our Year 9 and 10 animal care students. Liam talked about his career as a college animal technician and routes into various animal care careers. He also brought some animals in for the students to handle, including, Fatima the Fat-tailed gecko and Acacia the python!

Year 9 and 10 animal care students also took part in a virtual talk from the Blue Cross about careers in animal welfare. Jason Cortis of the Blue Cross, explained to our pupils all of the different routes into various animal care careers. When asked about what she enjoyed about this event, Leah Keane of year 9 said I enjoyed learning about a variety of jobs I could get in animal welfare. There were some jobs that I didn’t know existed before I went to this event.”

For anyone that may want to work with animals in the future, see the virtual careers event this Saturday for free. Please click the link to register: https://www.careerswithanimals.co.uk/south/

The science department included careers information in their lessons too, with our astronomy expert, Mr Harding, explaining some exciting astronomy careers to his classes. This was to raise awareness of Astronomy and Astrophysics career paths at all levels, with a focus on the up and coming Space sector (currently the fastest growing industry in the UK). Students carried out demonstrations to detect exoplanets outside of our own Solar System  and determine whether or not they were habitable.
